Shoes are an important part of what you wear every day. They protect your feet. And people notice the kind of shoes that you’re wearing and make judgments based on what they see.
Growing up I tended the have only one or two pairs of shoes. Typically I had one pair of inexpensive tennis shoes that my mother bought me each year. She always had me get 1/2 size bigger than what I actually needed because my feet growing. But then I wore those tennis shoes to school every day and I wore them in the yard and going shopping and run around the house every afternoon and evening. Summation point
My other pair of shoes were my dress shoes, usually leather, usually hard soles, always uncomfortable. And I had one or two pairs of thin dress socks so that the uncomfortable shoes would actually fit. My tube socks didn’t squeeze in to the shoes very well.
As I got older and out on my own I got more shoes, but I did go overboard. Not like some people who have a closet full of shoes. But I continued to buy shoes that were worn way too much and that were way too tight and uncomfortable. Until just a few years ago.
I read an article about aging and foot comfort and how important it is to go barefoot as you get older so that your brain continues to get sensations from your feet. Your body has to balance on bare feet instead of being bound in thick unfeeling soles so that you can’t feel anything with it except that they moved.
After reading that article about going barefoot as much as possible I went barefoot as much as I could my feet got all banged up and cut up. So I went looking for shoes that would be like being barefoot but I would be protected. I discovered minimalist shoes and zeroed in on a couple of companies.
Xero shoes started out making just minimalist sandal kits that people would assemble in the sandals at home grew that into whole business with premade sandals and nice barefoot style shoes that I found extremely comfortable. What I discovered is that having that wider toe box to allow my toes to stretch and be free rather than being bound up in a narrow shoe that looked really fancy but felt like crap helped my balance and help my attitude about life. I could go all day wearing the shoes and not ever complain or feel like my feet were hurting at all.
Another company that I discovered was Birchbury. They make the dressier leather shoes but still with a similar wide toe box and then soles allow you to feel the world underneath your feet and still look professional with leather wrapped around your feet. A little pricey but I found them to be very good shoes to wear in all work situations.
To help yourself become unstoppable I highly recommend these two companies products.
